When you start diving, you learn that what lies beneath the waves of the ocean, river or lake is at least as interesting as everything above. During your Open Water dives, you learn how to experience this new and fascinating environment as though it's the most natural thing in the world.
So what makes a National Geographic Diver special? Quite simply, you are given the tools and knowledge to not just be a visitor to the underwater world, but an explorer, adventurer and conservationist of one of the world's most precious resources.
As part of the course curriculum, you will learn from National Geographic experts about preserving coral reefs, protecting species, and respecting historical sites and aquatic habitat.
The National Geographic Diver certification is available in two formats: the "Portal" program for divers that are already Open Water-certified, awarded as a specialty; or as part of your Open Water certification.
The National Geographic specialty was an excellent supplement to my Master Scuba Diver "bootcamp" -- it reinforced what I had learned in several of my Adventure Dives earlier in the trip: my navigation skills were tested, and my buoyancy checked. Then to pull it all together, I was able to use my underwater photography and fish id skills as we completed the Exploration Project.
If I had to recommend a single specialty certification to anyone, it would definitely be this one: it will most certainly make you a better all-round diver!
In this course, you will hone your hovering skills in three postitions: head-up, head-down and horizontal; develop your natural and compass navigation skills; learn about local underwater life; and finally complete the Exploration Project.
